In the 21-Day Smoothie Diet, one day per week is set aside for eating normally (but still "healthy"). Most people, however, cannot safely continue to replace meals with liquids and live on so few calories over the long term.
Risks to your health
For one thing, there is no clear definition of what a "detox diet" entails.3 Digestive and excretory processes "detox" the body naturally (such as bowel movements and sweat). Hepatic and renal detoxification are primary functions of these organs. This is impossible for any one food or food combination to accomplish on their own. If you lose too much weight too quickly, you may lose muscle mass.7 The high sugar content of the Smoothie Diet may pose a problem for people with certain medical conditions (which is why it's not recommended for people with diabetes). In addition, weight loss is unlikely to be sustained if someone on a weight-loss diet switches back to their regular eating habits and increases their caloric intake. Why the 21-day diet should be repeated as many times as necessary could be due to this. Some people, including children, women who are pregnant or nursing, and those with certain health conditions, should not follow a "detox" diet. Be sure to discuss any new diet with your healthcare provider before starting.
